King William I ("The Conqueror")

Born at the castle of Falaise in Normandy in 1027, he died on 8 or 9 September 1087 near Rouen. William won the battle at Hastings and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day in 1066. He built the Tower of London, a.o., and at his command the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, the first record of names of all landowners and tenants.
