King Philip

He was the older son of Emperor Charles V. Born on 21 April 1527 at Valladolid in Spain, he was already widowed when his father arranged a marriage to English Queen Mary I in 1554, after which she insisted that he was crowned as English King as well. He wasn´t very attracted to the older Mary and didn´t stay much longer at her side than necessary. Their marriage remained childless, and after her death in 1558 he tried to arrange a marriage to her successor, Queen Elizabeth I. This failed, even though he was a better match now, as King Philip II of Spain, the Netherlands and all Spanish dominions (since his father had abdicated the throne in 1556). He married twice after that, and saw the Spanish Empire decline as the English Empire reached its peak, among others thanks to the English victory against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He died on 13 September 1598.

Here you can see his signature as King of Spain. All Spanish Kings signed "Yo el Rey" ("I the King").
