King Edward VIII
Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David (!) was the eldest son of the future King George V and Queen Mary. He was born at White Lodge, Richmond Park (Surrey) on 23 June 1894. At his birth, he occupied the unique position of being the third male heir in direct line to the throne (with his great-grandmother Queen Victoria being still alive). Known as "David" to his family, he was educated at the Royal Naval College and at Oxford. During the reign of his father (1910-36), he made several visits all over the world, where "Prince Charming" made quite an impression with his good looks. At the time of his father´s death in January 1936, he had already been together with American Wallis Simpson for some years, who was divorced and married again before she met the Prince. King Edward VIII wasn´t willing to end the relationship to her, on the other hand it was unthinkable to the Establishment that the King, also Head of the Church of England, would marry a twice-divorced woman. In December 1936, he abdicated in favour of his younger brother and left the country. He was created "Duke of Windsor" and spent his remaining years, married to Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, in France, where he died on 28 May 1972.
His signature as King "Edward R I" on a document from late January 1936. As you can imagine, his Royal signature is pretty scarce, due to the short term he served as King.
