The Manxman (1929)

Screenplay by Eliot Stannard, based on a novel by Sir Hall Caine; photography by John J. Cox.

Carl Brisson (Pete), Malcolm Keen (Philip), Anny Ondra (Kate), Randle Ayrton (her father).

A fisherman thought drowned comes back to find that his girl is expecting his best friend´s baby.

The last silent movie that Hitchcock made in late 1928, which he thought was the only notable fact about it. He later complained that he couldn´t change much due to the reputation of the famous novel and its distinguished author. Another untypical Hitchcock movie, this was a humourless romantic melodrama.

Carl Brisson (1895-1958, left) was a Danish leading man who enjoyed some popularity in British films. Among his successes were The American Prisoner (1929), Song of Soho (1930) and All the King´s Horses (1935).

Malcolm Keen (1888-1970, right), a distinguished British stage-actor, was the father of actor Geoffrey Keen. Among his rare appearances in movies were Sixty Glorious Years (1939), The Mating Season (1951) and Francis of Assisi (1960).

Anny Ondra (1903-87, below right) was a leading German-Czech actress in British silent films. When sound came, she had difficulties with her accent, returned to Germany, where she married German heavy-weight boxing world-champion Max Schmeling and made a few more movies. Among them were Schön muß man sein (1950) and Die Zürcher Verlobung (1957).
